We did it! An incredible team effort and journey across Utah, and I’m so very grateful to my family, friends, FCA family, and all my new friends I made throughout this 30-day challenge, which concluded this afternoon at the Utah/Arizona border, as I finished with a total of 528 mile, 1,000,444 steps, 23 blisters (over the 30 days),and one funny looking farmer’s tan

I’m forever changed by this amazing experience that was full of impactful daily takeaways; opportunities to meet and get to know many kind and generous people; an awesome opportunity to place a spotlight squarely on FCA Utah to raise awareness and resources for this amazing ministry; a whole lot of love, encouragement and support from family and friends; and a much deeper trusting relationship with God.

My takeaway for today —> There’s a huge difference between having hope and having faith. Many shared with me that they hoped I could survive the trading; some had hope I could complete the walk; and I’ve always been one who has been hopeful in an optimistic way.

When God placed this walk on my heart to raise awareness and resources for Utah FCA, I had complete, 100% Faith from day one we would complete the walk.

I had no idea how my body would hold up throughout the training (which totaled nearly 1,300 miles), or how the compounding mileage would impact my feet, legs and body once I started the 30 day walk, but I had complete faith God would be with me every step and see us through to complete the challenge.

Norw, with the walk behind me, I know the faith I had in God each day of the walk will be the same unwavering faith I’ll have in God in my every day life, and in all I do. For that, and so many other gifts over the last 30 days, I’m grateful.

Thanks again for everyone’s encouragement, prayers and support throughout the training and walk. It made me smile and put a bounce in my step each day.

Although the walk is complete, you can still help us reach our fundraising goal of $75,000, which will be matched for a total of $150,000. We’re $23,000 away and I’d appreciate you considering a donation to get FCA Utah over the finish line. Here’s the walk site, daily blog updates and link to donate —>

I enjoyed being back on asphalt for most of today’s route, as I walked 21.33 miles from pintura through Toquerville, Leeds and Hurricane to Washington, Utah to complete Day 29 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

The day did start out on lava rock for the first five miles, but after so many miles yesterday on lava rock, I was well prepared and navigated the rocks fairly well.

It was great to see a number of friends who came to St. George to support and encourage me as I look to finish the border to border challenge tomorrow.

I couldn’t help but get a bit emotional today at the 4.75 mile mark when I thought back on the training miles logged to prepare for this challenge; how God placed this on my heart and I fully trusted He’d guide us through it; all that I’ve experienced over the last 29 days; how challenging yesterday was, but we were able to overcome the adversity; all the amazing encouragement and support I’ve had since the start; and the awesome impact this walk will have on FCA Utah.

Thanks again for everyone’s continued encouragement, prayers and support of FCA Utah. It means a lot to me and I’m grateful.

Day Twenty Eight

Today was by far the most challenging day of the walk, and it was more a hike through the mountains over tough terrain covering 16.32 miles from New Harmony to Pintura, Utah to complete Day 28 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

Knowing it would likely be my most challenging day, here’s what I heard during my prayer before beginning the day (and it could not have prepared me any better for the challenges I faced):

Place all your trust in me and I will put people along the way to help you through all you’ll face today.

The route was challenging for many reasons; accessibility to land (came across many fences, gates and no trespassing signs); the terrain included lava rock and dirt for much of the second half; GPS didn’t work in two areas, including a dense wooded forest I was hung up in for a while; and a number of other challenges.

But as promised, there were people along the way (including my wife, Susie, and daughter, Kennedy, and Jennifer and Steve with the DOT, who were awesome with jumping in to help me navigate through the challenges today. I’m so very grateful to each of them.

Thanks again for everyone’s continued support, encouragement and questions regarding FCA Utah and the walk.

Day Twenty Seven

Today, I had the unique opportunity to walk on the same road with cows for a few miles - well, they were pretty much running from me - as I walked 18.02 miles from Hamilton’s Fort to New Harmony, Utah to complete Day 27 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

I had a late start this morning due to not being able to drop off my car where we planned my finish point today. The road was blocked by a gate, so we had to determine a new location for concluding today’s walk, which will be my starting point tomorrow.

The weather was in the low 70s, but as is typical for Cedar City and the surrounding areas, it was very windy, and unfortunately a head wind versus a tail wind.

I primarily walked on frontage roads for the first half of the walk, and then dirt roads for most of the second half of today’s walk. There were many cows on a stretch of dirt roads leading to New Harmony, and the cows seemed a bit surprised to see me walking on their roads.

The bottom of my right foot remains sensitive due to bruising an a large blister, but that’s really the only pain point.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, it’s going to be one of my more challenging days for a few reasons. One will be the route, which is through the mountains (10 of the 17 miles), with no cell service, and the terrain will be challenging, including finding a way across a steam.

A few questions to answer that I’ve received:

Q: Did you have a takeaway or thought from today that came to you while walking that you’d like to share?

A: I have so many thoughts that go through my mind during the hours I’m walking each day, and one that comes to mind is: I don’t want another day to pass that I don’t live intentionally and love unconditionally.

Q: In each of your pictures, you’re smiling, and while we all smile for pictures, are you really enjoying this physical challenge as much as it seems you are from the pictures?

A: I really am enjoying the walk for so many reasons. First and foremost, we’re achieving our goals of raising awareness and resources for FCA Utah. Second, this walk has been an amazing experience and gift to me, and I’ve enjoyed seeing the beauty of Utah, meeting and getting to know so many people; and I have enjoyed the physical, Spiritual and mental challenge the walk has presented to me daily.

I enjoyed walking 14 miles with friend and FCA Utah staff member, Megan Kelling, from Enoch through Cedar City to Hamilton’s Fort today, and then I did a few recovery miles to complete Day 26 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

It was another beautiful day, as the temperatures were in the 70s. The wind did pick up a bit in Cedar City, but it’s always great to have a breeze.

Once again, no new blisters, and I only have some soreness and sensitivity on the ball of my right foot.

I’m still receiving questions whenever I see friends on how I’m ‘holding up,’ and I continue to feel real good, and my nightly recovery has been good.

As we walked through Cedar City, and had the opportunity to swing through SUU’s campus, it was great to see and visit with Doug Knuth and reconnect with Marie Tuite, who I had the pleasure of working with at Washington years ago.

In addition, we had the opportunity to see and visit with FCA Team Chaplain, Joseph Kline, after we completed today’s walk. A fun visit.

A few questions to answer that I’ve received:

Q: If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?

A: I appreciate you asking; I turned 59 last Saturday (June 3).

Q: You’ve shared the goals for the walk are to raise awareness and resources for FCA Utah. How are you and the FCA Utah Team doing on these goals?

A: A great question, and I’ve been asked this a few times the last couple days. It’s been great to shine a spotlight on FCA Utah over the last 26 days. We have talked about FCA Utah with so many people across Utah, and we’ve received commitments for board members and volunteers, and as of this morning, 80 people have stepped forward to pledge or donate, and I’m super grateful to each of those folks.

Our fundraising goal for the Walk Across Utah is $75,000 to match the $75,000 gift provided by a group of donors for a a total of $150,000 to Utah FCA.

As of this morning, we’ve raised $38,610 for a total of $77,220 towards the $150,000 goal.

Thank you to each of you who’ve graciously donated to FCA Utah! I’m grateful to each of you. For those of you who are considering a donation, you have a few oprions:

1. You can provide a special one-time gift:

2. You can become an FCA automatic monthly partner by donating a set amount each month via automatic deposits:

Q: With just a few days left in the walk, will this be the easiest stretch of the walk?

A: I have about 60 to 65 miles to cover over the next four days to reach the Utah/Arizona border, and a pretty challenging 10-mile stretch to navigate through the mountains on Friday.

Thanks again for everyone’s continued support, encouragement and questions regarding FCA Utah and the walk.

I was back on the road - a paved road - and enjoyed the early morning sunshine, walking 17.12 miles from Paragonah through Parawon and Summit to Enoch, Utah to complete Day 25 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

Today was the earliest the sun has come up, and I was replacing my beanie with a bucket hat only 3o minutes into my walk, and tucked my hoodie away shortly thereafter. It was a beautiful day for a walk and I had great energy from start to finish.

I definitely enjoyed being back on an asphalt road versus the dirt and gravel roads, and although the one large blister on the ball of my right foot remains a bit painful, no new blisters.

I did receive a surprise voice mail today from Patrick Murphy-Racey, who I haven’t seen in several years, as he was passing through Utah from Knoxville, Tennessee on a solo motorcycle trip.

Pat and I first met when I was in Winona, Minnesota at Winona State University, which is also where I was first introduced to FCA. Pat came to speak at a photography class, and we reconnected when we were in Knoxville.

Pat tried finding me on the frontage roads I walked today, but I had finished by the time he drove the roads, but we were able to catch up at the home I’m staying at tonight. Fun to see and visit with him.

A few questions to answer that I’ve received:

Q: Knowing you’re a planner, I’m curious what your Plan B is if for whatever reason you’re not able to complete the walk?

A: From the start, many have asked about a Plan B, and each time I’d say, there’s no Plan B. I’m walking across the state; it’s going to happen. Believe in me because I believe in Him.

Q: Have you been eating well in preparation for this Walk; both your training days, as well as your walk days, and has your diet changed much?

A: I guess it all depends on what you mean by ‘eating well’ I’m eating a ton.; a lot more than I normally eat.

I carb load at night; eat nothing but CLIF Bar and hydrate when I walk; and this afternoon, for example, I enjoyed two corn dogs, two chicken sandwiches, a piece of pizza and lots of Core Power, Body Armour and water following my walk.

It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that someone told me I needed to stop eating well, which I try to do when I’m not walking 500 miles, and start replacing all the fats I’m burning off. So I’ve been loading up on the fats, and it’s helped with my energy level.

Thanks again for everyone’s continued support, encouragement and questions regarding FCA Utah and the walk.

A good friend, Nicholas Downs, joined me for today’s 14.23 mile walk from State Road 20 to Paragonah, Utah to complete Day 24 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

It started out with a light drizzle, which presented us an awesome rainbow, but the rain didn’t last long. It remained overcast the first half of the walk, and then warmed up into the 70s for the last few miles.

It was a straight shot along a frontage road with a good portion of the road paved and the remainder dirt and gravel.

I did finish the day with a large blister on the ball of my right foot, but the good news is that is the only blister I’m treating at this point.

I enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with Nick and appreciate him making the drive to and from Ogden, Utah to walk with me today.

This transitions well into today’s question, which is: Are you walking alone? Are there times someone will walk with you?

Nick is the second person to walk a full segment (day) with me, and I’ve had three other people each walk a few miles with me. I’ve walked alone 20 of the 24 days.

Another dirt road with rocks frontage road day covering 15.23 miles from Beaver to State Road 20 to complete Day 23 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

The temperatures were in the low 70s with a slight breeze, so great weather conditions for a long walk. The frontage roads were mostly dirt with some rocks, but very few vehicles.

This morning was the first day I didn’t wear bandages on my feet to cover blisters (or add padding to the bottom of my feet) since Day 1 when I started this walk. I felt the blisters were in good shape and it would be best to have just socks and shoes.

It worked well; no new blisters and my feet and toes feel good. That doesn’t mean I won’t pick up a blister tomorrow, but grateful for new blisters today.

A few questions to answer:

Q: How are you feeling at this point, and how would you compare how you feel today versus when you started?

A: I’ve had a number of people text or call and ask, “How is your body holding up?” I feel real good. In fact, I feel like I’m getting stronger each week.

Q: I’ve enjoyed the ‘takeaways’ you’ve shared. Could you share another takeaway or thought on how the walk has impacted you?

A: One of my recent thoughts from this walk is that it really isn’t about having faith in the training I did or how strong my body may feel at this point.

When the blisters were piling up and I had a calf strain, it was all about having faith in God and His strength to get me through those days.

I am so much stronger - physically and spiritually - than I was on Day 1 of this walk, and that has less to do with the faith I have in the training I did, and more to do with the faith I have in God and His strength.

Today was a low mileage day covering 13.07 miles from Manderfield to Beaver, Utah to complete Day 22 of 30 - and wrap up Phase III of IV - in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

I begin the final phase (Beaver to the border) of this border-to-border challenge tomorrow morning, and the eight days through Southern Utah will have lots of hills.

I had a bit of a later start this morning, and will go later in the morning tomorrow, as well, which will mean warmer temperatures, but nothing like what I’ll face the last few days when I get closer to St. George and the Utah/Arizona border.

I did have an encounter with two dogs that snuck up behind me and started barking, but when I turned and raised my arms, they jumped back. So I went towards them a few more times until they retreated back to their yard.

Overall, I feel great going into the final phase. My feet are mildly sore, but no new blisters and the blisters I have are manageable.

A few questions to answer:

Q: Since it’s evident you enjoy writing, have you considered writing a book that chronicles the walk, highlights lessons learned and/or takeaways from your experiences?

A: I have considered sharing takeaways from this Walk Across Utah in a book with proceeds benefitting FCA Utah.

Q: Would you do this walk again?

A: I was asked this question a few times earlier in the walk, and without hesitation, I said, ‘No, one and done.’ Now, I have to admit, I’ve thought about the possibility of doing it again. It really has been an amazing experience, but I’d need to be convinced FCA Utah would greatly benefit from doing the walk again.

Q: What’s your next adventure or challenge?

A: I have no idea, but I’ll take suggestions. I did have a friend recently suggest I consider running in a 50K ultra trail run, which I’ve never done.

This morning, I got off the beaten path, and walked the majority of today’s 19.02 miles on dirt roads from Cove Fort to Manderfield, Utah to complete Day 21 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah.

Two of today’s dirt roads were actually ‘highways’, and when you look at the pictures of these roads, it’s hard to believe they’re called highways. None of the back roads had street signs, as well.

It started out raining, but that didn’t last long. It did end up being a cooler day, and I missed one of my turns off a dirt road, but I didn’t mind the additional scenic miles.

My feet were not as sore this morning as previous days, and most of the blisters are healing well, so it was a pain-free day of walking, and I enjoyed the cooler temperatures and beautiful scenery.

It’s hard to believe there are only nine days left in this challenge. It’s been awesome to put a spotlight on FCA Utah; fun to meet and get to know so many neat people; and take in all the incredible views of Utah.

Note: I’m going to answer a question, as I’ve done in each of these posts, but I do have a second post coming tonight, so stay tune.

Question —> What would you say has been one of your most impactful takeaways or life lessons from this walk?

I’ve enjoyed so many neat experiences over the last three weeks, but probably three of my biggest takeaways have been: 1) Always trust in God 100 present; 2) Take time to rest; truly rest; 3) There’s so much more I can do to positively impact others.

Enjoyed a cool, overcast day walking 20.07 miles from Sevier to Cove Fort with Corbin Talley in Day 20 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah. Great conversations, incredible views and the weather was awesome.

Starting out, I felt about as good as I’ve felt since I’ve started the walk. Although my feet and toes continue to have some soreness from the amount of miles (364) walked over the first 20 days, I feel like I’m getting stronger and feel real good heading into the final stretch.

A question I was recently asked:

There's likely been sacrifices you’ve made with the training and actual walk. Could you share some of those with us?

First, I’d like to acknowledge many who have made sacrifices to support me on this walk, starting with my wife, Susie, who did (and probably still does) think I was crazy to take on this walk, but as she always is, she’s been incredibly supportive with her time and encouragement.

Corbin, who walked with me today, invested time with creating the route, and tips on training, eating and hydration, as well as encouragement since day one that we could successfully complete this walk.

Connie Nelson of FCA has been instrumental with the Walk website, creative, blog and with everything Walk related behind the scenes.

Nick Downs has been supportive in many ways with this walk from the day he learned it would happen, including the creation of the ‘thank you’ graphics and messaging created following each days walk.

Joel Bass, Woocheol Choung and others have been gracious with their time, expertise and support on the medical side to assist me with staying healthy throughout the walk.

The FCA Utah team and FCA Utah state board teammates - Josh, Samu, Megan, Brian, Kyle and Randy - have been incredibly supportive and encouraging ever since we shared the idea of the walk.

Mike Sanfratello, FCA vp of the Rockies, has been an awesome teammate since day 1 when we pursued bringing FCA to Utah, and when we shared the idea of the Walk Across Utah.

There have been a large number of volunteers behind the scenes advancing my car and/or providing me transportation to my daily walk starting point, and these pick ups and drop offs are very early in the morning.

There have been a number of churches, pastors and church members across the state who’ve opened their doors and provided their support, encouragement and overnight accommodations.

So the investments I’ve made to prepare for and do this walk pale in comparison to all those who’ve come alongside me to support this walk in an effort to raise awareness and support of FCA Utah. I am so very grateful.

Thanks again for everyone’s continued support, encouragement and questions regarding FCA Utah and the walk.

An awesome day to walk 17.38 miles from Richfield through Elsinore and Joseph to Sevier, Utah in day 19 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah. Hard to believe we only have 11 days left in this challenge.

The bottoms of my feet and toes were very sore yesterday following my longest mileage walk since I began training, but when I put my feet on the ground this morning, they didn’t hurt like other mornings, and I was ready to go.

Once again, I enjoyed a great walk and it wasn’t until the last four miles that my feet and toes began to hurt a bit, and I could feel a new blister forming on the ball of my left foot. But, all-in-all, I feel great. Grateful my ankles, knees, legs and body overall feels good.

A few questions I’ve been asked:

What has the weather been like on your walks so far? The weather has been great. Only a handful of days with rain the first week, but that cooled things off. With early morning starts, I’ve been able to avoid the afternoon heat. The low temperatures have been in the high 40s and the high temps have been in the mid 70s.

How much water are you drinking while you walk? Typically 80 ounces, and I refill my backpack hydration blaster a second time on long walks.

What are you doing for your feet? I do Norma Tec compression therapy following each day’s walk; followed by soaking my feet in Epson salt water bath. I then rub melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil) on my feet and toes.

Additionally, I drain the blisters each night and morning, and pad/wrap blister and bruised areas prior to putting on my socks and shoes.

Thanks again for everyone’s continued support, encouragement and questions regarding FCA and the walk.

Walked 23.08 miles from Salina through Aurora, Vermillion, Sigurd, Kema and Grams to Richfield today to complete Day 18 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah. Just 12 more days to go in this awesome challenge for an awesome sports ministry.

I felt really good starting out, and for most of the walk. Towards the last few miles, though, the mileage and sun were starting to wear me down

I recovered well last night, and the 23 miles - which also is my favorite number - is the most miles I’ve logged in one day since I started training for this walk.

My feet are pretty sore, but the good news is, I only have one new blister and the others are not as painful as they’ve been the last week.

Question I was recently asked —> It appears you may be on pace to surpass your goal of 500 miles before June 11. Will you conclude your challenge once you reach 500 miles?

We set out to complete the 30-day challenge to walk from the Idaho/Utah border to the Utah/Arizona border - which will be over 500 miles and 1 million steps - to raise awareness and resources for FCA Utah, and although I am on pace to surpass 500 miles before June 11, our plan is to conclude the walk on Sunday, June 11 at the Utah/Arizona border.

By doing this 30-day challenge, it places a spotlight on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Utah; the incredible impact this sports ministry has on coaches and athletes; as well as the needs FCA Utah has to continue to fulfill its vision and mission.

Walked 15.06 miles from Gunnison to Salina today to complete Day 17 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah. Only 13 days to go in this challenge.

Overall, I feel good. While my legs, ankles and feet have little soreness, the blisters have been a bit challenging on my toes, and I have more today than any other day. I’ve treated each, will rest tonight and be ready to go in the morning.

I’ve been asked by a few people what are some takeaways from this walk as I’ve begun the second half of the challenge.

I have quite a few. One takeaway that has been on my mind since the first week of the walk is this: In life, we can get going so fast each day that we're not aware of our surroundings. We’re simply going through the motions (our daily routines) and moving quickly from A to B, and sometimes we miss opportunities to engage people, or make someone’s day better.

On this walk, I’ve committed to be present each day; be aware of my surroundings, whether it's nature or people, and appreciate everything that crosses my path.

While passing through a park, I engaged with a homeless woman, and I enjoyed a conversation with her, and we shared a CLIF bar together. The smile on our faces lasted well after I left the park.

That encounter, for me anyway, likely would not happen during my normal, fast-paced, busy day. But after this walk, I know it will because I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact it can have; not only for others I engage, but on me, as well.

Another question I’ve been asked often is where do you stay, and am I camping out each night.

I did answer this in an earlier post, but I’ll update everyone who may have missed that post. I’m staying with family, friends and at churches along the way. I’ve enjoyed meeting people, and greatly appreciate all the hospitality extended to me.

Another recent question: Do people pull over in their vehicles and ask if you need help or a ride?

People have pulled over a number of times in remote locations where locals don’t typically see people walking down a highway. I thank them for stopping, offering a ride, and share why I’m walking.

Thanks again for following along on this adventure, all the positive messages and asking questions. As I’ve shared, I’ll continue to answer one question each day in my social media posts, and I’ll answer more questions in the walk blog at

Walked 18.05 miles from Ephraim to Gunnison today to complete day 16 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah for a total of 288.50, which leaves only 211.50 to complete the challenge

The bottoms of my feet and toes are a bit sore, primarily due to three blisters I needed to drain this morning, but I feel good otherwise.

I’ve been asked how the weather has been throughout the walk, and all but a handful of days at the start where I had some rain, the weather has been terrific.

I start out between 6-7 am (depending on distance to start), and get a good share of the mileage in before the heat rises. There have also been a good number of overcast days.

Another question I was asked: How did you prepare for this walk, and now that you’re halfway done, would you have done anything differently?

First, I want to thank Corbin Talley for the time and experience he shared with me. Corbin jumped on board to assist me from the beginning when I shared the idea with him.

He created the route, recommended the training, and along the way, offered encouragement, support and eating tips.

I logged over 1,300 training miles prior to starting the walk; walking every day for 4 1/2 months. Typically 8-10 each week day; 12 or more on Saturdays; and 15 or more on Sundays.

I also worked out and used the rowing machine on most days I trained.

There’s nothing I can think of that I would have done differently now that I’m over halfway through the walk challenge.

Thank you for all the positive messages and questions. I’ll continue to answer a question or two here, and others in the daily blog posts at

Prayers, persistence and praise! We’ve reached the halfway point in our FCA Walk Across Utah, logging 22.40 miles today to total 270.40 miles over the first 15 of the 30-day challenge.

My calves, feet and toes continue to be sore, and I have a few blisters, but once I get a few miles into each days walk, I focus on the mile ahead, the beauty of Utah, and the next picture to capture, and I quickly forget about the aches and pains.

Enjoyed a 17.03 mile walk today from Hwy 132 outside of Nephi, Utah through Fountain Green to Marina, Utah to complete Day 14 of the FCA Walk Across Utah

I was better prepared today on what to expect on Hwy 132 as I wrapped up the first 8 miles, then enjoyed walking on dirt paths off on the side of the road for much of the final 9 miles for the day.

My legs, calves and feet are sore, but that’s to be expected. Going to enjoy a restful afternoon and look forward to walking from Moroni to Ephraim, Utah tomorrow to complete the halfway point of 15 days in this 30-day challenge.

Question I was recently asked and my answer:

Q: How are you finding your faith and prayers playing a role in this challenge? How have you seen the support of the Lord, and the sustaining power his spirit offers as you exercise faith and plead for strength on this journey?

A: The walk is something God placed on my heart to do and He’s been my teammate in this journey since my first training walk. I pray prior to and following each walk, and know it’s His strength that sustains me daily.

Thanks so much for everyone’s encouragement, positive energy and prayers. Grateful.

Walk Across Utah on Highway 132.

The change in elevation, little to no shoulder room on the highway with rocks and uneven pavement, a strained left calf muscle and high winds made the final climb a tough one.

The good news is, I’ve banked 17 extra miles towards the goal of 500 through the first 13 days.

Walked 20.03 miles from Payson, Utah to Mona, Utah today to complete day 12 of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Walk Across Utah.

I was on the road just past 6 am and grateful for an overcast day through the first nine miles. The sun made the final 11 miles a bit toasty, but all-in-all, a great walk today.

How are you preparing yourself for each day’s walk?

I start preparing the night before with a carb load. I set out my clothes and shoes, and prepare / reload my backpack with CLIF bars and water/Liquid IV. I also recharge my ear pods and portable phone charger.

In the morning, I load drinks, snacks and food in an ice chest with a couple cold packs; get dressed; and drive to my starting point. While I’m walking, two people advance my car to my finish location.

Do you change into different walking shoes each day or alternate between two pair?

I presently have 3 pairs of New Balance shoes. One that’s a half size bigger and I wear them if my feet are swollen; and two pair that are my normal size and identical pairs of shoes. One pair I use each day, and I have a new pair to replace my current shoes when they start to break down. I only alternate to the larger shoes if my feet are swollen.

What do you find yourself thinking about during the long stretches? How are you keeping your mind occupied?

I have lots of thinking time, but I also have a lot of time to see the beautiful sights; find pictures to take and share; Audible books and podcasts; music; and I walk for stretches without ear pods to take in my surroundings, greet and engage with people; and focus on being present with nature and the beauty that surrounds me each day. I also need to stay focused on the route so I don’t miss turns along the way.

Now that you’ve surpassed thee 200-mile mark, how is your body holding up and how are you feeling? Are you where you thought you’d be through 200 miles?

I feel like my body is absorbing the miles well. It’s definitely more miles than I’ve ever walked over 12 days, but overall, I feel good. A few of my toes are pretty sore, but that’s to be expected. I felt the training miles I logged the last five months prepared me well, but I didn’t know how the volume of compounding miles would impact me over the 30 days. So far, I feel real good, and hopeful my body continues to absorb the daily milage over the remaining 18 days.

Thank you for everyone’s positive energy, encouraging messages and the questions, which I’ll continue answering here in these daily blog posts.

Walked 20.39 miles from Provo, Utah through Springville, Spanish Fork and Salem to Payson, Utah.

I was on the road just before 6 am, and have a greater appreciation for overcast days, as it was this morning until mile 17 when the sun came out.

I felt great throughout today’s walk. My feet and toes continue to be sore, and I’ll be soaking them in Epsom salt today, but overall, today was a great day for walking.

A few questions I’ve been asked this week:

What are you doing for overnight accommodations and transportation?

Up north, when I started at the Idaho/Utah border, I stayed with our daughter, son-in-law and grandkids, which was a lot of fun; and presently, I’m able to stay at our home, commuting to each day’s starting point. As I move further south, I’ll be staying at a handful of churches.

I’,m grateful to have a team of people - Sam, Chelsie, Nick, Josh, John and Jill - who have been kind enough to tag team advancing my vehicle each time I drive to my starting point. They place my vehicle where I conclude each day’s walk.

Do you feel safe walking the roads and paths each day, and what does your wife think about you doing this walk across the state?

100 percent. A large percentage of the time, I’m either walking on sidewalks, a paved pathway or a large area of the side roads. I always walk against traffic when on the side of the road so I can see the cars approaching. I always have my head up, on a swivel and pay attention to my surroundings.

Since I shared the idea to walk across the state, Susie has thought I’m crazy to do it, but she’s tremendously supportive; not only with this walk, but in all I do. Before I started, she just wanted to be assured I’d be safe each day.

In each of your pictures, you’re smiling and obviously enjoying this walk. Has it been easy, and are you smiling when you finish each day’s walk?

I am enjoying this walk for several reasons. It’s a great challenge, and I always enjoy an awesome challenge. It’s for an amazing sports ministry, and I’m motivated to accomplish our goal of raising awareness and resources for Utah FCA.

The walk has not been easy. The training challenged me; not only the mileage, but the amount of time I needed to invest walking each day. Now, the high volume of mileage each day compounded has been taking a toll on my feet, toes and body. So far, my recovery each day has been good, and I just need to continue doing what’s needed each day to properly recover.

Thank you for all the questions, which I’ll continue to answer, and everyone’s encouragement each day.

Walked from Lehi, Utah through American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Lindon and Orem to Provo.

It was great to see and catch up with Clark Livsey and Justin Durfey when I finished today’s walk.

I was able to get an early start again, and glad I did, because it was hot as I finished up. I continue to feel good. I have the typical soreness one would have with logging the miles I have over 10 days, but overall, I feel good.

A few questions I’ve been asked are:

What shoes are you wearing; how many did you go through during your training; and how many will you go through during the 30 day walk?

I’m wearing New Balance shoes, and presently trading off between two pairs. I went through three pairs during my training, and anticipate I’ll go through 3-4 pair during the 500-miles. Being bow legged, I tend to break down shoes pretty quickly.

What are you eating prior to, during and post walks, and have you lost weight?

I do a carb load each night, and also try to eat protein and vegetables. During my walks, I’m continuously drinking Liquid I.V. and eat a CLIF Bar prior to starting my walk and each hour during my walk. Post walk, I enjoy spaghetti or lasagna, protein drinks, cheese sticks and ice cream. I’ll also ocassionally eat pizza, as well. I have lost weight, but not sure how much.

Would you say this 30-day walk is more of a physical or mental challenge?

A great question. It really is both. It’s as physically demanding as it is a mental marathon each day. I walked over 1,300 training miles in preparation for this challenge, and each of those miles helped prepare me mentally and physically for this 30-day walk.

Walked from our home in South Jordan, Utah through Riverton and Bluffdale to Lehi, Utah (where the movie, Footloose, was filmed in 1984).

I was able to get an early start and rack up some good mileage. Overall, feel good. Some soreness in my calves, feet and especially my toes.

One question I’ve been asked by a few people is “how do you have time to take all those pictures and walk?’

I look for opportunities to take photos I think others might enjoy seeing. It’s an opportunity to share just a few of the many things I’m seeing on this 30-day adventure.

Also, as many of you know, I have low vision, and don’t always see what others see naturally, so being able to see things up close has been awesome.

Another bonus to taking pictures is that it helps me focus on positive things rather than the natural aches and pains one experiences when logging a lot of miles on foot.

Since today is a day of rest, I’ll take full advantage of it.

Started out early to beat the heat, walking from Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City to our home in South Jordan, Utah.

Found some neat back woods paths to take and enjoyed seeing and greeting all the bikers, walkers and runners who passed by along the route.

Many have asked how my body is holding up, how do I feel, and what’s the blister count.

My body is holding up well. Yes, there’s been aches and pains along the way; and my feet (especially my toes) are sore; but after 138 miles, that’s to be expected. The blister count is five, but two days ago, I started taping all 10 toes to protect them.
Thanks again for all the encouragement and support. We have a long ways to go, but the good news is, we’re over a 1/4 of the way across the state.

I enjoyed walking 2.5 miles with Ted to start the day and finished the day walking with Samu to Smith's Ballpark, where a group of us enjoyed an FCA Utah group outing an evening game. It was great to see and visit with friends throughout the game.

Surpassed the miles century mark today with a 15 mile trail walk from Layton/Kaysville to West Bountiful.

I entire route was on the rail trail, which is a beautiful scenic route with walkers, bikers and runners.

There were quite a few animals along the way, lots of water, and I had the opportunity to feed a few horses.

Longest mileage day (21) so far, and while I enjoyed the sights and people along the way, I did pick up a few new blisters to add to my other two.

Today was actually only supposed to be a 16-mile day, but I was talking on the phone when I was supposed to make a turn, and passed right by it. By the time I realized I went too far and had to double back, I racked up the additional miles to finish the day.

Overall, aside from the blisters, I feel real good.

A beautiful morning walk covering 19.43 miles from Willard, Utah through Perry and North Ogden to Ogden, Utah.

It was overcast to start the day and the sun appeared for the final eight miles, which was nice to see. The previous three days included overcast skies and rain at some point during the walks.

A great morning walk through Sardine Canyon, and went through the towns of Brigham City and Perry, finishing in Willard, Utah.

The first part of this walk was a total descend through the canyon, which can be tough on the legs if your feet don’t match the hill, which I made sure I did every step.

The roadsides along Perry were pretty narrow, but light traffic. Enjoyed the sights through Willard.

Next up, Willard to Ogden, Utah.

This was marked on the schedule as one of the hardest days, as it included eight miles of ascending up the mountain, before descending down the other side tomorrow.

This day is one I trained for and was excited to take on the hills.

As I entered the canyon, though, there was a down pour that made the climb a little more interesting, but it did damper my excitement.

The sun eventually came out, and the final two miles I was singing and had an extra bounce in my step.

I’ve been looking forward to this day for quite some time, and after looking more than 1,300 training miles, I was excited to get started on the FCA Walk Across Utah.

Josh joined me at the border to walk with me for the first two miles, and then I finished the final 18 miles, arriving at Alpine Church in Logan.

I was well rested after tapering my mileage the last two weeks of training, so I had a pretty quick pace and enjoyed the long walk.

Only 29 more days and 480 miles to go
